Scientist discusses major quake on its 308th anniversary

Dr. Kelin WongThis year’s Geology Lecture Series at Southwestern Oregon Community College will continue with a free talk by Dr. Kelin Wang on “Great Earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest: New Views of Monitoring and the Episodic Tremor and Slip Story” at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, in the Hales Center for the Performing Arts on the Southwestern Coos Bay campus.

The lecture is scheduled on the 308th anniversary of the last great Cascadia subduction zone earthquake which took place at 9 p.m. on Jan. 26, 1700 and Wang will be discussing some of the cutting edge science associated with the study of Cascadia megathrust earthquakes taking place at the Pacific Geoscience Center.

Wang is a Senior Research Scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada at the Pacific Geoscience Center located on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. He also holds a joint professor appointment at the University of Victoria, serves on the editorial board of three journals and is the president of the International Professionals for the Advancement of Chinese Earth Sciences. Wang obtained his baccalaureate degree from Peking University in Beijing and doctorate in geophysics from the University of Western Ontario.
