Lakers represented on All-Academic TeamTwo Southwestern Oregon Community College basketball players have been recognized for their efforts on the court and in the classroom as part of the NWAACC All Academic Sports Team. To make the cut for this prestigious group, student athletes must be top competitors in their sports and also maintain high grades in their college coursework. Myrtle Point resident and Powers High School graduate Kathleen Luce represented Southwestern on that list of students, whose grade-point averages ranged from 3.26 to 3.88. “Kathleen exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete,” said Southwestern women’s basketball coach Stacia Rustad. “She’s been a tremendous player and leader on the court for us and she obviously is taking care of business in the classroom, too.” Men’s basketball team captain Bobby Watkins, from Henderson, Nev., also made that list for the men’s team, which featured players with grade-point averages ranging from 3.26 to 3.95. He also recently was named Honorable Mention all-league and was selected to play in the sophomore all-star game. “He’s a true student-athlete,” Southwestern men’s coach Trevor Hoppe said. “He excels both on the court and in the classroom. He takes both those things seriously and there’s no doubt in my mind he is going to be successful with whatever he does.”
