Respected poets to read at SouthwesternSouthwestern Oregon Community College is hosting a free poetry reading with two renowned poets at 7 p.m. on Feb. 15 in Eden Hall, room 1, on the Coos Bay campus. Dorianne Laux, a prize-winning poet, will be reading from her new book “Facts About the Moon.” The author of “Smoke,” “Awake,” “What We Carry” and “The Poet’s Companion,” Laux’s new book won the Oregon Book Award in 2006. “She takes her stance as a hero of the ordinary, with both feet firmly planted in the luminous material world,” Tony Hoagland wrote of Laux’s work. The author of “Overtime,” an Oregon Book Award finalist, and “Fortune,” Joseph Millar will read from his readily accessible poems in which the personas of common laborers, waitresses and line workers voice their experiences. His work has been characterized as stark unsparing narrative. Laux and Millar both share winning humor and genuine warmth as they read, and the readings will be followed by a question and answer session. The poets will have books available for purchase.
