Nursing Program expands into Florence, BrookingsTo help fill demand for nursing professionals in rural communities, the Southwestern Oregon Community College is expanding its geographic scope for offering nursing education. Through partnerships with three hospitals in Oregon and California and use of Internet Protocol Television, Southwestern will begin training nurses in Brookings and Florence beginning in Fall Term. Five openings are available in Brookings for students to participate from the Southwestern Brookings Center, and four are available in Florence. The IPTV technology allows students and faculty members to interact in real time despite considerable distances, reducing travel for students participating in the program. WebCT, the platform used for online course delivery, also is used to supply students with assignments and exams on the Web. Through partnerships with Peace Harbor Hospital in Florence, Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach and Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City, Calif., students studying in Florence and Brookings will be able to obtain clinical sites to complete that portion of their degree programs. Deadline for submitting applications to the Southwestern Nursing Program is Feb. 15, and applicants are required to prioritize their campus preference. Nursing Program applications are available online at http://www.socc.edu/catalog/AAS_nurse.html. For more information, those interested can contact Aimee Higgins at (541) 888-7443, e-mail ahiggins@socc.edu or call the Brookings Center at (541) 469-5017.
