College starts ‘Service Saturdays’ with campus clean-up

Service Learning at Southwestern Oregon Community CollegeSouthwestern Oregon Community College is celebrating its first “Service Saturday” with a campus clean-up day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday on the campus in Coos Bay.

In collaboration with College student and faculty groups – including the Student Ambassadors, Residence Life and the Service Learning Advisory Team – Southwestern is introducing the days of service to provide opportunities for students and community members to work together to reach common goals. Each Service Saturday focuses on a new area of the community and provides new experiences, from leading youth activities to assisting the elderly with household tasks.

Those interested in participating are asked to meet in the quad on campus wearing tennis shoes and work clothing. Activities will include trash clean-up, painting and planting flowers, and volunteers are welcome to stay for any length of time they are available. Participants also will be able to enjoy a barbecue in Student Housing and will be entered in raffles every two hours throughout the day.

For more information, those interested can contact Julia Rose at 888-7311 or e-mail jrose@socc.edu.
