About the SOCC Athletic Training Program

athletic training 7

Southwestern Oregon Community College (SOCC) has 10 scholarships available for students interested in pursuing an Athletic Training major.  These scholarships are the same as the student-athletes and cover tuition ONLY.  Expenses for books, dorms and institutional fees are not covered.  Out of state students do not have any extra expenses.  For more information on scholarships and tuition please go to the financial aid web page or contact Kelly Leavitt, SOCC Athletic Trainer at kleavitt@socc.edu.

As an Athletic Training Student you will start working in the Athletic Training Room the first day of school.  The Certified Athletic Trainer and sophomore Athletic Training Students will begin to teach you how to tape, keep medical records, and treat the injured student athletes.  The Athletic Training courses you enroll in to complement and reinforce your clinical experiences in the Athletic Training Room.

Athletic Training students will have the opportunity to work with men’s and women’s athletic teams that compete at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).  Athletic teams include Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Track and Field, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Baseball, Softball, Wrestling, Cheer/Dance, Wrestling and Volleyball.

Within the program, the students will embark on field experience on the playing and practice fields as well as a work clinical where the student will gain experience as an athletic trainer in the workplace. Through these assignments, the students are exposed to the various aspects of organization and administration of the athletic training program while utilizing the athletic training staff as a resource. This wide range of experience enhances the total development of each athletic training student's skills.

SOCC will give you an introduction to health care education along with a strong base in the sciences. You will receive supervised experience and become familiar with the educational components essential to Athletic Training.  These courses along with hands on experience, will better prepare you to transfer to a 4-year school as the academic knowledge and practical experience are significant additions to any application or resume.  Should you happen to discover that you prefer another health care profession or major, you will still have two years of beneficial college credits on your transcript as an abundant number of basic required educational courses here at SOCC.  The Athletic Training Program also meets the requirements for a separate degree, the Associate of Arts, Oregon Transfer Degree (AA/OT).

Completion of this program will qualify students for articulated 2+2 transfer to the accredited Athletic Training Education Programs (ATEPs) at Eastern Washington University and a 1+2 transfer to the ATEP at Washington State University.
