HORTICULTURE
HORT8122 Greenhouse Crops
(Herbaceous Perennials Production)
4 credits (3 lec, 3 lab hrs/wk)
This course will introduce students to the environmental influences on plant growth, crop scheduling, greenhouse structures and equipment. It will also cover the selection, propagation, commercial
production, and garden management of herbaceous perennial plants.
Prerequisite: HORT130.
HORT100 Introduction to Horticulture
4 credits (3 lec, 3 lab hrs/wk)
Covers basic principles of plant
structure, physiology, genetics, development, reproduction and growth as applied to a wide range of horticulture crops. Survey of the plant kingdom. Plant identification through the use of keys and morphology. Laboratory activities include plant propagation, plant growth manipulations, maintenance and greenhouse environmental control.
HORT111 Landscape Construction Techniques
4 credits (2 lec, 4 lec-lab hrs/wk)
Materials, equipment and techniques used in landscape construction with an emphasis on hardscapes. Safety issues emphasized. Topics will include decks, fences, planters, walks, patios, gazebos, water features, retaining walls and golf related construction including bunkers, fairways and greens.
HORT112 Introduction to the Green Industry
2 credits (2 lec hrs/wk)
Survey of the Green Industry with emphasis on the turf and landscape management industry. Special emphasis on golf, other sports, and the recreation industry including career opportunities. Covers state licensing requirements and industry certifications.
HORT115 Equipment Operation, Maintenance and Safety
3 credits (1 lec, 2 lec-lab hrs/wk)
Introduction of common equipment used in greenhouse, turf and landscape
operations. Basic fundamentals of engine construction, operational theories and principles, lubrication, fuels and oils, emissions and preventive maintenance. Skills to perform small engine maintenance and repair and complete equipment inspection sheets. Skills include
the proper use and maintenance of
standard greenhouse, turf and golf course equipment.
HORT123 Landscape Maintenance
3 credits (2 lec, 2 lec-lab hrs/wk)
Introduction to all phases of turf and landscape maintenance. Select appropriate plant and turf types, prepare growing beds, seed and transplant turf and landscape areas, recognize growth deficiencies and disease, and maintain turf and landscape areas.
HORT130 Plant Propagation
3 credits (2 lec, 3 lab hrs/wk)
Designed to introduce all facets of plant propagation including methods of
propagating by seeds, bulbs, divisions, layers, cutting, budding, grafting, and micro-propagation. Students learn
about timing, technique, and media requirements for rooting cuttings, and seed propagation. Various propagating structures, soils, and fertilizer
requirements will be discussed.
Prerequisite: HORT100.
HORT132 Pesticide and Herbicide Handling and Application
3 credits (2 lec, 2 lec-lab hrs/wk)
Course covers identification of, use for, and proper, effective and safe application of state approved pesticides and
herbicides in the landscapes. Organic alternatives will be discussed.
HORT145 Turfgrass Installation and Maintenance
3 credits (2 lec, 2 lec-lab hrs/wk)
The sod and seed installation techniques and turfgrass management practices. Topics include turfgrass selection, soil preparation, fertilizers, pest control,
equipment, and golf course specific
considerations with an emphasis on
cultural practices.
HORT210 Landscape Design Theory
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)
Functional and aesthetic aspects of
landscape planning as a basis for design decisions affecting the built environment; the environmental impact; the site planning process; history of landscape planning; and case studies.
HORT212 Landscape Design Applications
3 credits (2 lec, 2lec-lab hrs/wk)
Landscape design software and its use in landscape design. Students will use
software to produce several custom designs, plant lists, and reports.
Prerequisite: HORT210 with a grade of “C” or better and CS120.
HORT223 Basic Surveying and Analysis of Landscape Sites
3 credits (1 lec, 4 lec-lab hrs/wk)
Surveying techniques using various surveying instruments and site analysis needed in the design and construction of landscapes. Fundamentals of plane surveying and the use of various surveying instruments. Instruction and skill development in reading a topographical map, reading a landscape plan, using GPS systems, and understanding state mapping standards.
HORT226 Landscape Plant Materials (Fall)
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)
The identification of trees, shrubs, vines, and ground cover used in landscape
horticulture with consideration of cultural requirements for individual species and varieties and use in landscape composition. Offered fall quarter with an emphasis on seasonal exhibits.
HORT227 Landscape Plant Materials (Winter)
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)
The identification of trees, shrubs, vines,
and ground cover used in landscape horticulture with consideration of cultural requirements for individual species and varieties and use in landscape composition. Offered winter quarter with an emphasis on seasonal exhibits.
HORT228 Landscape Plant Materials (Spring)
3 credits (3 lec hrs/wk)
The identification of trees, shrubs, vines, and ground cover used in landscape horticulture with consideration of cultural requirements for individual species and varieties and use in landscape composition. Offered spring quarter with an emphasis on seasonal exhibits.
HORT231 Landscape Irrigation
and Drainage
4 credits (3 lec, 2 lec-lab hrs/wk)
Introduction to turf and landscape
irrigation and drainage systems including designing, estimating, installing,
maintaining, and troubleshooting irrigation and drainage systems. Emphasizes the design and maintenance of efficient
irrigation and drainage systems on golf courses and residential, commercial,
and public parks facilities. Includes
compliance codes and regulations. Addresses topics in industry irrigation a
certification exam.
HORT255 Herbaceous Ornamental
Plant Materials
3 credits (3 lechrs/wk)
The identification of species and varieties of annuals, perennials, groundcovers, ornamental grasses and bulbs with
consideration of cultural requirements for individual species and varieties and
use in landscape composition. Offered spring quarter with emphasis on
seasonal exhibits.
HORT264 Landscape Estimating and Bidding
2 credits (2 lec hrs/wk)
Methods and mechanics of estimation. Interpretation of specifications and
drawings, material takeoffs, contingency and overhead calculations, pricing
strategies, production rates, and bid
procedures.
Prerequisite: MTH80 with a grade of “C” or better.
HORT280 Field Experience in Horticulture
1-4 credits (33-396 lab hrs total)
The student is required to be employed in a full-time (paid or voluntary) horticulture or horticulture-related position for an organization or company utilizing environmental principles, methods, techniques, and/or skills.
