Gold Beach, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering Mandarin Chinese for Beginners in Gold Beach. This class introduces students to Chinese conversation and written language skills to communicate with native Chinese. Instructor Yan Huang is a native of China and has taught Chinese at Humboldt State University.

Coos Bay, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College’s Small Business Development Center (Southwestern SBDC) is offering an exciting learning opportunity in Brookings October 9th on selling to the government. Federal, state and local government agencies spend millions of dollars every year purchasing goods and services from the private sector. Small business owners often are afraid to tap into this lucrative market because it seems so complex. This workshop will introduce participants to the basic tools to grow their business through selling to the government.
Student tuition waiver positions available in Curry
There are two exciting opportunities for students in Curry County who want to be actively involved in their college experience.
The opportunity is for two students to serve as Student Activities Programmers in Brookings and Gold Beach. Student Programmers will work with faculty and staff to create events and activities for the students of Southwestern Oregon Community College that are both fun and educational. This is a great opportunity to get involved in the community and make a difference at your school!
Transitional Education and GED orientations scheduled for fall term
The Transitional Education Department will be offering GED exam preparation, college and career preparation, and college placement test preparation this fall. Students can build a pipeline to enter college, training programs and jobs in high-demand career areas.

The Port Orford Co-op is the July 2014 Southwestern Oregon Community College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) success story. With the assistance of the Southwestern Oregon Community College Small Business Development Center, Port Orford Co-op opened in November 2013. Since then board members have attended SBDC QuickBooks training and received one-on-one assistance with using QuickBooks software.

New First Stop Representative in Curry
John Jenkin is the new First Stop Representative for the Curry Campus of Southwestern Oregon Community College. John started working in Student Affairs in 2006 at the University of Wyoming. There he served as Area Supervisor for the Wyoming Union, and oversaw the Union’s Information Desk and Ticket Office, as well as the Union Billiard Hall (now Pete’s Pocket).
