Southwestern sets Ikebana workshop in Curry County

Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering a workshop on Ikebana, the ancient Japanese art of flower arranging, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, in Curry County.

Instructor Feliz Hartstra will teach students the basic principles of proportion, line and line-mass, design and execution with extensive use of overheads. Students will receive individual instruction in the creation of projects. In this one-day, hands-on workshop, all students will choose appropriate plant material and create two different types of arrangements.

Students should bring to class two vases – one tall and the other flat – two floral frogs, a pair of shears, a pail for water and lunch. Extra items to bring might include river rocks and cameras. Flowers will be provided by That Special Touch.

Space is limited, and pre-registration is required by March 6. Cost to participate is $35. For more information or to register, those interested can contact the Southwestern Brookings Center at (541) 469-5017.
