Southwestern Letter

Thank you for registering for a distance learning course from Southwestern. The following information is provided to assist you in making your online course experience successful. You need to read and follow the procedures below carefully.

Southwestern email is here!

Southwestern is pleased to issue to all distance learning students official email accounts. Having this account will allow Southwestern faculty, staff and fellow students to communicate vital information to you through your email account with greater ease. You will be expected to read many important school related messages that will be sent to this account.

Your Southwestern email address will be the same as your WebAdvisor ID, for example (kmatson@email.socc.edu) and your password will be your six digit date of birth, for example (050384). You must go to the Student Technology Handbook page for directions on how to use your student email.

Please allow one week for your student email account to be created. If you have any questions, contact 24/7 Support.

Wait List information:

If you are not registered in the class by Friday before classes, you may contact the instructor to see if you may still be added to the class. You should check with the instructor each day during the first week of classes as other students may drop the class resulting in an open seat. Students will be added to the class in the order of the wait list. It is your responsibility to confirm your registration status, wait list status, as well as your account balance status.

What if my course requires a prerequisite or additional course work?

  • It is important that you visit the distance learning website to see if your instructor has additional requirements.
  • Your course may be listed in Southwestern's Catalog as requiring competencies in a specific course with a grade of C or higher. If you withdraw from or fail to prove successfully completing a prerequisite, you may be withdrawn from your current online course by your instructor.

What is the difference between WebAdvisor and WebCT?

WebCT: WebCT is the web based software designed to deliver online learning. Southwestern has adopted WebCT as our delivery platform for our online courses.

WebAdvisor: WebAdvisor is Southwestern's web based registration system that allows you to register online. It is for all students and all courses offered by Southwestern. Not just online courses.

What if I am having difficulties with the course?

Not everyone is ready for online courses. You must be comfortable and have access to a reliable, internet capable computer. You will be asked to log in, send emails with attachments, upload and download files, and research on the world wide web. Your instructor will expect you to have these skills prior to registering for the course.

  • Your instructor is NOT there to teach you how to take an online course. Southwestern has a variety of ways for you to be successful. Please make sure you are ready for this new, exciting, convenient way to learn!
  • Take the student online WebCT Tutorial. The set of tutorials on our website consist of a series of Web pages that explain and demonstrate the basic skills to be successful in a WebCT classroom.
  • Contact our 24/7 Support.
  • Contact the Distance and Community Education department (541-888-7415) for registration information about our Introduction to Online Learning online!
