While at Southwestern, you will need to research information for your assignments. Once you graduate, you will most likely continue to research to make informed decisions in your job and for your family. By increasing your information literacy skills, you can search, locate, and evaluate these resources more effectively for your academic and personal needs.

Online Library Tutorial
The online library tutorial consists of six (6) self-paced interactive instructional modules that are designed to teach the basic information skills. The modules include an introduction, main text, activities, hands-on practice, review questions and quizzes. Each module takes about 30 minutes to complete.

System Requirements
This interactive tutorial uses layers, pop-up windows, Javascript, Flash and Cascading Style sheets (CSS) extensively. To avoid problems, make sure your computer meets the system requirements before you begin the tutorial. When in doubt, use the computers in the library and the computer labs on campus to view the tutorial.

Information for Faculty
Information literacy is the ability to effectively locate, evaluate, and use appropriate information to make reasoned decisions. Not only does it require technology and computer skills, it also focuses on content, communication, and analysis. Students who are information literate will be able to assume greater control over their own learning throughout their lives.

Credits and Thanks
This online library tutorial is an adaptation of Searchpath, the information literacy tutorial designed by Western Michigan University. Searchpath has incorporated material from TILT, a tutorial developed by the University of Texas System Digital Library. Being able to use Searcthpath’s framework has allowed us to concentrate our efforts on customizing the tutorial for Southwestern Library users.

Thanks are also extended to Karen Helland, Instructional Director, for her financial support in purchasing the software to develop the tutorial.

Feedback
We would appreciate your feedback on the usefulness of the tutorial and any suggestions you have for improving them. Please contact Pauline Smith psmith@socc.edu (541) 888-7261.
