Spring Term 2008 Regional Geology Field Classes

Cape Kiwanda – Saturday April 19th.  The Cape Kiwanda trip visits a number of localities along the north central coast including: Jump Off Joe, Gleneden Beach, the submerged forest at Neskowin, Cape Kiwanda and Beverly Beach.

Oregon Caves – Saturday May 3rd. The main focus of the Oregon Caves visit is a visit to the Oregon Caves National Monument. Participants need to be prepared for the cave tour which lasts over 90 minutes and covers over 230 vertical feet and 500 stairs.  The cave is damp in early spring with a temperature of approximately 44 degrees.  In addition to the cave, several stops looking at the complex geology along the I-5 corridor will be made.

Lava Beds – Friday May 9 – Sunday May 11th.  The Lava Beds field trip is available for geology or history credit.  This interdisciplinary class allows students to see a variety of volcanic features, travel through lava tubes, view Native American petroglyphs and pictographs, discuss the Modoc War, see migratory waterfowl at Tule Lake and the remnants of two World War II internment camps.  We camp at the monument for two nights.  Instructor consent from Ron Metzger or Fred Brick is necessary to register for this trip.

Cape Arago – Saturday May 17th.  This local trip will make a number of stops along Cape Arago, tide permitting.  Then head down to Bandon for several additional stops.  Some of the highlights include the fossils at Fossil Point, discussions of the geology at Shore Acres and a look at a world famous blueschist deposit in Bandon.
