Spring Term 2014 Regional Geology Field Classes


Cape Kiwanda – Saturday, April 19th. The Cape Kiwanda trip visits a number of localities along the north central coast including: Jump Off Joe, Gleneden Beach, the submerged forest at Neskowin, Cape Kiwanda and Beverly Beach.

Lava Beds – Friday, May 9th – Sunday,  May 11th. The Lava Beds field trip is available for geology or history credit.  This interdisciplinary class allows students to see a variety of volcanic features, travel through lava tubes, view Native American petroglyphs and pictographs, discuss the Modoc War, see migratory waterfowl at Tule Lake and the remnants of two World War II internment camps.  We camp at the monument for two nights.  Instructor consent from Ron Metzger or Fred Brick is necessary to register for this trip.

Cape Arago – Two Options: Saturday, May 3rd or Sunday,  May 4th. This local trip will make a number of stops along Cape Arago, tide permitting.  Then head down to Bandon for several additional stops.  Some of the highlights include the fossils at Fossil Point, discussions of the geology at Shore Acres and a look at a world famous blueschist deposit in Bandon.
