A New Scholarship for Southwestern Students

A new scholarship is available called the Mike Groben Endowed Scholarship Fund. The goal is to raise a significant sum to establish an endowment fund, where earnings of the fund are used to provide the Mike Groben Scholarship year after year. As the invested principal grows more and more scholarships will be available to award to students that are eligible. Donors are asked to give what they can $100-$1000.

Bill Lansing, retired CEO of Menasha, and now chairman of the 18 member trustees of the college foundation said this about Mike Groben: “In Mike’s professional career he has touched so many of us in the timber industry and demonstrated such incredible fortitude to people at large. As far as I am concerned, this man exemplifies everything there is about a positive outlook on life and never ever have I heard him complain about his many ailments and challenges– nor for that matter ever seeing him giving up! The target for the scholarship recipient from this endowment at SWOCC is quite simple – the award will be given to someone “who has overcome obstacles in his/her life” – any kind would qualify. The best candidate might be a local returning disabled veteran from Iraq or Afghanistan as an example. The college would screen the applicants and make their recommendation to the Foundation’s scholarship committee.”

The college Foundation is a 501 c 3 non-profit which exists to support scholarships and facilities to provide quality education at Southwestern. Contributions are tax deductible and the tax ID number is: 93 6031563. Contributors to the fund may write their check to the Southwestern Oregon Community College Foundation, 1988 Newmark Ave, Coos Bay Oregon 97420.
