Look in the classified ads section of the World (www.theworldlink.com) for used cars or visit a used car lot. Remember you can always negotiate a better price.

  • Have a friend who knows about cars come with you to take a look at the car.
  • Before you make an offer, visit the library to find out it’s current value from a reference book called the Blue Book.
  • You will need an Oregon driver’s license to drive. Your international driver’s license is only a temporary license.
  • It is mandatory that you have automobile insurance. It is recommended that you have collision and liability insurance for your car.

Consider purchasing AAA auto coverage. (forms available in the ISP)

Getting an Oregon Driver’s License

What do I need to drive a car in Oregon?
Valid driver's license or instructional permit
Automobile insurance
AAA auto coverage( not required, but recommended)

Do I have to get an Oregon license if I have an international one?
Yes. Tourists and short-term visitors to the USA are allowed to drive with an international license. If you are a student here, you are not a tourist and must get a state driver's license.

How do I get an Oregon license?
- Pass the written driver knowledge test
- Pass a vision screening and road sign recognition test
- Pass a driving test
- Pay the correct fees ($54.50)
- Provide proof of identification

How can I take the written and sign recognition tests?
You can take the written test at the DMV in Coos Bay or here on campus in the ISP office by appointment. The sign recognition test is separate from the written test. It uses video to test your knowledge of road signs, and is only given at the DMV office.

If I fail the test, can I take it again?
Yes, but you will have to wait to take it again.

What should I do if I'm in an accident?
- Stop at Once-IF YOU DON'T STOP, IT'S A CRIME!!!!!
- Help injured people as best you can
- Exchange driver information
- Report the accident to the DMV
- Keep a copy of the accident report

What should I do if I hit an animal or parked car?
Try to find the owner of the car. If you cannot find them, leave a note on the car with your contact information. If you hit an animal, stop and try to help if you can. Report the animal's injuries to owner or nearest police office.
