How do I get started?

Transitional Education offers classes each quarter to help students with reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  For a daily class schedule, click here.

 

Can I study for my citizenship (naturalization) exam?

Yes.  Citizenship is built into the ELA classes and we also have a dedicated volunteer who specializes in working towards the naturalization exam.

 

Is ELA the same as ESL (English as a Second Language) or ELL (English Language Learners)?

While each of these terms is slightly different, the general meaning is the same.  ELA classes are designed to help students learn, understand, and practice the English language.

 

Do you offer Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) classes or the TOEFL exam?

Not at this time.  However, we can refer to a place that does.

 

How much do ELA classes cost?

ELA classes cost $57 per term.

GED

What is the GED exam?

GED stands for General Educational Development and is a set of tests that, when successfully completed, indicate that the student has met high-school level academic skills. The GED is equivalent to a High School diploma and also qualifies a student to be eligible for financial aid for college courses.

The GED consists of four tests: Science, Social Studies, Reasoning through Language Arts, and Mathematical Reasoning.

How do I get started on my GED?

If you believe that you are ready to take your GED tests, all you have to do is go to MyGED.com and create an account. On that site you will register and pay for your GED and set up a time to take each of the four tests.

If you need to refresh your skills, Transitional Education has classes to prepare to pass the GED tests.  Classes are available in Tioga Hall on the Coos Campus as well as in Brookings, Gold Beach, and Port Orford.

There are currently two locations where you can take GED tests in Coos and Curry Counties:

How long will the GED test take?

There is a different time limit for each GED test. The time limits are as follows:

Science – 90 minutes

Social Studies – 90 Minutes

Reasoning through Language Arts – 150 minutes

Mathematical Reasoning – 115 minutes

 

How much does it cost to take the GED tests?

Each of the 4 GED tests costs $38 for a total cost of $152. When making your testing appointment on MyGED.com, you will pay the testing fee online using a credit or debit card.

Do I have to take all of the GED tests at once?

You do not have to take all four GED tests at one time. According to MyGED.com, there are no restrictions on how much time you have to complete all the tests once you have taken your first GED test. However, we recommend that you complete your tests within a year.

What are the passing scores for the GED?

Each subject test is scored between 100 and 200 points. The scoring range is as follows:

Below Passing: 100 – 149

Passing Score: 150 – 169

Honors Passing Score: 170 – 200

Are practice tests available?

GED Testing Service offers a free preview tests on their website: http://www.gedtestingservice.com/educators/freepracticetest

There are also GED Ready practice tests on MyGED.com that cost $6 per test. These tests are exactly half the length of the actual GED test and will be scored the same as the official exams. The GED Ready score report tells students if they are likely to pass or if it’s too close to call and they should keep studying. Students enrolled in Transitional Education courses can take the Practice Tests for free upon instructor recommendation.

Are there online GED courses?

We do not offer GED courses online at this time.

What is ABS?

ABS stands for Adult Basic Education.  If you already have your high school diploma or GED and just need to brush up on your reading, writing, and math skills, we can help.

Can you help me improve my college entrance exam scores?

Yes.  ABS classes are focused on reading, writing, and math—which is what most entrance exams test.  Save time and money by boosting your placement scores to qualify for college-level classes.
