Library 127 Introduction to the Library

This class introduces students to college level research skills, including the use of online catalogs, reference materials, online databases and internet sources. It is a

1-credit transfer course, offered online Fall, Winter, and Spring terms.

Course objectives

The LIB 127 class will provide instruction to enable students to accomplish the following:

  • access information efficiently and effectively
  • locate and use various information sources, including books, periodicals, media, and electronic databases
  • evaluate authority of the information accessed
  • understand how information is collected and disseminated
  • understand how information is organized in the Southwestern library
  • demonstrate basic search strategies via subject/keyword, author, and title access points using both print and nonprint materials
  • have an appreciation for accurate and relevant information, and understand its relationship to the scope and depth of any given topic or research project
  • prepare a bibliography according to standard bibliographic formats
  • have an appreciation for the various needs for information, and a better understanding of how this affects quality of life as well as lifelong learning, both in and out of the classroom

There are no prerequisites.
