SWOCC Geology Lecture Series Continues with “Plastic in the Global Ocean" on May 17th
COOS BAY, OR – SWOCC’s geology lecture series continues on Saturday, May 17th at 7:00 pm with "Plastic in the Global Ocean" by Dr. Giora Proskurowski (University of Washington). This free lecture is at the Hales Center for the Performing Arts on the SWOCC campus and is open to all members of the community. Dr. Proskurowski graduated from Amherst College with a degree in chemistry, but was lured to the Earth sciences with the prospects of using the submersible Alvin to study hydrothermal vents. He received his master’s and PhD degrees from the University of Washington in chemical oceanography, studying the connections between biology, geology, and chemistry at deep-sea hot vents.
Forestry Degree Returns to Southwestern
Southwestern Oregon Community College has just approved a new Associate of Science (AS) degree in Forestry, to begin Fall Term 2014. The College is in the process of finalizing an articulation agreement with Oregon State University (OSU). This means that students who complete Southwestern’s AS degree in Forestry, will then be able to transfer as a full junior into the Bachelor of Science (BS) Forestry program at OSU.
"Walk A Mile in Her Shoes" Annual Awareness Event
On Wednesday April 30, 2014, Southwestern will host “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence”. Inspired by the saying that you can’t understand someone else’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in his (or her) shoes, men will literally walk one mile in women’s high heeled shoes!

NOTICE OF BUDGET COMMITTEE MEETING
A public meeting of the Budget Committee of SOUTHWESTERN OREGON COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT; COOS, CURRY AND WESTERN DOUGLAS COUNTIES, State of Oregon, to discuss the budget for the fiscal year July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015 will be held in Room 505 of Tioga Hall on the College campus, 1988 Newmark Ave, Coos Bay. The meeting will take place on the 12th day of May 2014 at 6:00pm. The purpose of the meeting is to receive the budget message and recommended budget, and hear questions and comment from the public on the budget.

Free Books Encourage Reluctant Readers
The event is designed to encourage light or reluctant readers. Southwestern Library staff will be giving away about 60 copies of novels and nonfiction works to students beginning at noon in the lobby of the PAC. The books include the best-selling Wild: Lost and Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Oregon author Cheryl Strayed, as well as a few other classic or popular titles. Other SWOCC staff will be giving away books at off-campus locations.
Realtors Create College Scholarship Fund
The Coos County Board of Realtors® has joined with the Southwestern Oregon Community College Foundation to create a permanent scholarship fund. Over the next four years, the Realtors®’ will donate $10,000 to an endowment to fund annual scholarship awards to Southwestern students in their second year of college.

Shift Happens Seminar

Spanish for Medical Professionals SPAN903401
COOS BAY, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering an evening Spanish course tailored to meet the needs of the health-care professional who has limited or no experience speaking Spanish and wishes to communicate with Spanish speaking patients and clients. The course can be taken for credit or audit. This 11-week course will be held in Sitkum Hall, Room 9 on Thursday evenings 6-8 p.m., April 3 – June 12.
Adult Foster Care Training CE994701
COOS BAY, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College to offer Adult Foster Care (AFC) training starting April 26, 2014. AFC is basic training for adult foster care providers. This course stresses quality, individualized care including philosophy (capability, choices, dignity, individuality, privacy, home-like setting), how to meet residents’ needs in a community setting, screening for the right fit in home placement, as well as business operations as detailed by Oregon’s AFC regulations. The training costs $145 and will be held in Sitkum Hall, Room 10 on Saturdays April 26-May 17 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
