SWOCC Celebrates 51st SWOCC Graduating Class

COOS BAY, OR – The Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) 51st annual commencement will be held at 7 p.m. on June 15, 2012 in the Coos Campus Prosper Hall gymnasium.  Class of 2012 graduates and their guests are also invited to attend a reception in the Recreation Center gymnasium following the program.

The processional and musical opening will be performed by the Bay Area Concert Band and directed by Mark Allen.  College President Dr. Patty M. Scott will provide the welcoming remarks and introductions.  Board of Education Chair David Bridgham and Faculty Senate Chair Michael Turner will offer greetings.

Elsie Floyd, this year’s Associated Student Government President, will provide the commencement address, Dr. Patty M. Scott will present 2012 Distinguished Alumni award to Kathy Laird. Phillip Anderson, the Vice President and David Bridgham will present and confer the graduates, followed by the presentation of the University Center Degrees by Bonnie Olson. Dr. Patty Scott will conclude the evening with the tassel ceremony and the presentation of the Class of 2012.

Sign language interpretation will be provided for the ceremony. Overflow seating is available in the Coos Campus Hales Center for the Performing Arts where the event will be shown live on the theater screen. The event will also be streamed live at www.socc.edu by clicking on the red “Event Streaming” icon on the lower right side of SWOCC’s home webpage. There will be a special recognition of the 50th class of Nursing. More information about the 50 years of Nursing at SWOCC.

Students, alumni, and people and organizations throughout the community have an opportunity to commemorate their experience or special individuals by purchasing an engraved Legacy Brick that will be permanently placed in the Henry Hansen Union Square on the Coos Campus.  The minimum donations for a 4”x8” and 8”x8” brick are $100 and $200, respectively.  Graduating students can order their own brick and a place in SWOCC’s history for 25% off the normal minimum donation through June 30.  Proceeds of the Legacy Brick support Southwestern Students and Alumni through the Laker Club Alumni Association.
