This course covers the syntax used by Datatel's database neutral computed column language. Computed columns (field/column/function that is executed and returns a value rather than stores physical data) are an important part of the Colleague implementation. Computed columns are used in Rules and Communications Management and by native database tools when querying the database. The class focuses on learning the tools used to create computed columns, gaining the knowledge of the specific syntax used and provides hands on experience with creating custom computed columns. Further, the class includes background information on metadata research, computed column, and best practices.

Course Outcomes

  • Explain the concept of Envision metadata and its application to computed columns
  • Identify the forms required to create and test computed columns
  • Apply Datatel's database neutral syntax in computed column code
  • Identify what metadata repositories are populated as a result of when a computed column is generated
  • Utilize best practice standards when creating calculated columns
  • Create and manage computed columns

The Faculty Information and Curriculum Management module accommodates decentralized business processes in which faculty can perform registration and grading functions from their desktops. The course addresses class offerings, academic catalogs, academic programs, and student advisement.

Course Outcomes

  • Implement the Faculty Information and Curriculum Management modules
  • Use reporting capabilities for academic planning and review
  • Learn about the modules' relationships with other Datatel Colleague modules
  • Create and maintain academic programs, including program requirements, affiliation to catalog year, and historical program and catalog information
  • Define and maintain courses and course section records, including course descriptions, active dates, requisites and restrictions, faculty and meeting assignments, status changes, enrollment limitations, wait-list options, and special course charges
  • Run reports on enrollment trends
  • Create course and section blocks for block registration
  • Document faculty teaching preferences, qualifications, faculty schedules, course section teaching assignments, workload measures, and organizational memberships
  • Assign advisors in batch using rules or individually
  • Make counselor assignments
  • View and maintain advisee information

The Communications Management module, part of Datatel’s Colleague solution, helps higher education institutions organize and monitor a variety of incoming and outgoing communications. Flexible code definitions and processes enable you to automatically assign appropriate outgoing communications (hard copy or electronic) to a wide range of recipients and track the receipt of all incoming items (including information requested to complete their file). This module provides an interface with Microsoft Word for document design, merging, and printing controls and the tools to update records individually, in groups, or automatically as documents are sent and received.

Course Outcomes

  • Identify the four main components of Communications Management
  • Develop communications workflows to effectively utilize the automated features within the module
  • Create documents in Colleague and the associated merge forms in Microsoft Wordde
  • Define and set up correspondence tracks
  • Build communication codes to track incoming information and trigger other actions
  • Create correspondence request definitions
  • Process and merge outgoing information
