The Erica Atkisson Memorial Scholarship

Congratulations to Kira Rubenthaler, winner of the 2014 Erica Atkisson Memorial Scholarship, for her submission The Hunter.

Kira Rubenthaler lives on the Oregon coast, where she enjoys writing, reading, and hiking with her dogs. A former journalist and English teacher, she now runs Bookfly Design, a small business providing book cover design and editing services to independent authors and self-publishers.

Erica Atkisson loved to laugh and write and walk on the beach. The South Coast Writers Conference in Gold Beach was special to her. In Erica's memory, her writerly friends have created a scholarship fund to cover the tuition cost of the conference as well as a travel stipend. We know that Erica would have been delighted to share the conference experience in this way. Memories of her struggles as a young, single mother informed many of her writings. In her more comfortable years she was always generous and encouraging to other writers.

The writing prompt is “In a few days this would all be a memory.”

Scholarship applications will be screened by the board of the nonprofit organization, and one scholarship will be awarded this year.
