EMAIL TUTORING

How we do it:

Writing tutors will check email regularly and respond as quickly as possible. TUTORS ARE NOT ALWAYS ONLINE, SO RESPONSES TO YOUR EMAIL SUBMISSIONS ARE NOT INSTANTANEOUS. Usually, we’ll respond usually within twenty-four hours, and often much sooner.

What we'll do:

Because we want you to become an independent writer, we will NOT PROOFREAD OR EDIT drafts of your paper for you. However, we will look through your essay, point out the most important errors (grammar, punctuation, etc.) and email our comments to you. We also will answer questions about your paper: its introduction, conclusion, development of ideas, or appropriateness of the writing.

What to send and how to send it:

  1. Print this page so you will have these directions;
  2. Open your own email account; go to your new message (compose/create) screen
  3. Address To: onlinewritingtutor@socc.edu
  4. Include the following in your email:
    • Your name, the course, and instructor
    • The instructor's description of the assignment
    • Specific questions about where you need help
      (i.e. Is my thesis clear? Is paragraph 4 clear?)
  5. Send the pages you wish to have reviewed as an attachment in Word or Microsoft Works.

The tutor will usually respond within 24 hours.

Note: If you do not have the word processing systems above, cut and paste the passages you want reviewed into your email and we’ll respond—within twenty-four hours.

Who Should Use the Online Writing Tutor

This service provides access to writing tutors. The goal of SOCC’s online writing tutorial service is to help the student become an independent writer. Thus, if we succeed in doing so you no longer need our help. If possible, we encourage you to bring your writing to the Writing Center.
