Skills Day Event Details

2008 Contest Schedule (Coming soon...)

Campus maps are available on the Southwestern website at: http://www.socc.edu/about/maps.html

Bus parking will be in parking lot #3 (signs will be posted).

Upon Arrival:  Since each school arrives at different times due to their bus schedules, most students should report directly to their contests; there will not be a central meeting area except for math contestants.  Staff will be making the rounds of campus to make sure the contests are running smoothly and everyone finds their contest.

Packets are distributed to high school faculty upon arrival that contain a roster of all the students from their school and the contests Southwestern has them registered for, maps & schedules, a pen, a highlighter, some scratch paper, pens for students, a few paperclips and a few post-its.  High school teachers are asked to highlight student names that attend (or participate in any of the contests by submitting entries but chose not to attend), cross off those that don’t participate and write in any additional students (this helps in making up certificates of participation).  Please correct spelling errors.  Return rosters to Skills Day staff members, or leave them in Lakeview E/F (upstairs Empire Hall) along with any extra supplies before leaving for the day (they will be set aside for use next year).  All participants receive a certificate of participation, so it is very important that the lists are accurate.

Lunch: An all-you-can-eat lunch is provided by Premier Services (cafeteria on campus) that is paid for with a Carl Perkins funded grant through SCESD.  Be sure that you sign up your students for lunch when they register!  Lunch tickets will be given to high school teachers after they arrive for both students and teachers.  Lunch is from 11:00 am –1:00 pm in Empire Hall.   Please try to send your students in small groups every 10-15 minutes, so that not all students eat at the same time.

T-shirts are provided by Southwestern.  Coquille High School graphic arts student, Charlene Ramsey, provided the winning t-shirt design entry from last year as the design for the t-shirts this year. Coquille HS graphic arts students and their instructor, John Bealey, will print the t-shirts.

T-shirts will be distributed Thursday morning at the individual contests.  If we’ve guessed incorrectly as to which contest the student decided to attend first (for those in multiple contests), students might not get their t-shirt until they go to the next contest.  Please return any t-shirts for students that end up not participating before you leave (but keep them for students that may have submitted entries for contests that were completed ahead of time & chose not to attend) to Lakeview E (upstairs Empire Hall).  As students register, please make sure to include their t-shirt size.  Every effort to supply the requested size will be made.

Check out the winning t-shirt design!

2008 Winners

There will be an Awards Dinner on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 from 5:30-9:00 pm in the Hales Performing Arts Center (PAC) building on the Southwestern campus for the top 3 finishers in each contest, their parent/guardian and their high school teacher.  A three credit Southwestern tuition waiver certificate for 1st place winners and a one credit Southwestern tuition waiver certificate for 2nd place winners will be distributed at the dinner.  Ribbons will also be awarded for 1st/2nd/3rd place winners.  Some contests have additional prizes also.  Winners will be asked to RSVP to: skillsday@socc.edu .
