Constitution and By-Laws

I. Name: The Native American Student Association

II. Mission Statement:

The Native American Student Association is committed to Native American interests. Core activities will be centered on issues that are of concern to Native Americans and serves to promote cultural appreciation within the Southwestern community and the community at large. Membership is free to anyone who wants to participate in club activities.

Native American Student Association (NASA) enhances the cultural experience of Native American students by providing culturally relevant programming and activities which also increases the college's awareness of Native American cultures.

III. Membership

  • Membership is open to anyone who wishes to learn more about the Native American cultures.
  • A clear member is one who attends at least half of the available meetings.
  • Each member is entitled to participate fully in activities, events, and voting for new amendments and officers.

IV. Officers

  • The different official positions are: President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Public Relations, and Research Technician.
  • All officers serve one school year (Fall term to Spring term), and may be re-elected for as many years as they live in community and/or attend this college.
  • Election for new officers will be the first meeting in May.
  • If the Presidential position becomes vacant for a meeting, the Vice-President fills in (will assume) the vacancy in the President’s absence. If it is permanently open for year, the Vice-President fills (will assume) the vacancy , and promotes a new Vice-President until the next election.
  • The duties of the officers are as follows:

President:

  • Serve as the presiding officer of the association.
  • Call special executive community meetings when necessary.
  • Appoint committees as necessary.

Vice-President:

  • Preside in the absence of the President.
  • Coordinate the annual election process.

Secretary:

  • Record and distribute the minutes for all meetings.
  • Maintain all necessary organizational records including a role of the membership.
  • Notify members of meetings and events.

Treasurer:

  • Be responsible for the collection of money.
  • Be responsible for preparation and maintenance of the budget, including an annual report to the membership.
  • Maintain proper financial records and file an annual financial report.
  • Verify current membership status for annual report

Public Relations Officer:

  • Coordinate all aspects of publicity for the club.
  • Disseminate information within club.

Campus Contact:

  • Act as the representative of the club.

Historian:

  • Keep a record of the club for the future.

V. Meetings and activities:

  • Regular meeting times and places will be decided by the second week of the term.

VI. Amendments:

  • Amendments not in conflict with this constitution may be passed by 2/3 (of the body) of the club. Such amendments must be presented, in writing, to the club 14 days before adoption.
