Southwestern Student Handbook
MANDATORY READING
A reading skills class is required for all full time (12 credit) or
degree seeking students whose test scores are between 30-38 on the
ASSET Placement test or 36-68 on the COMPASS Placement test. Students
are required to attend reading skills classes until their test scores
are 39 or higher on the ASSET or 69 or higher on the COMPASS.
Students may take other courses needed to complete their programs
or degrees while enrolled in
reading skill classes.
Disabled students (with verified ADA eligibility) will not be excluded
from this policy based on
disability alone.
MEDIA SERVICES
Tioga Hall, First Floor, 888-7266
Media Services provides audio-visual and multi-media equipment for
instructional and campus-wide use. Students may access Media Services
equipment for use in class projects and demonstrations on a limited
basis.
Media Services also houses the Teleconferencing Center – two
classrooms on the first floor of Tioga Hall equipped with various
types of videoconferencing systems used mainly for distance education
classes and short term training. The department provides administrative
and technical support for teleconferencing activities.
Audio and video tape duplication services are provided by this department.
Dubbing services are limited to instructor requests and personal
recordings. Materials with a copyright will not be duplicated without
proof of copyright waiver.
MESSAGES
The switchboard operator cannot take or deliver messages for students.
In case of an emergency contact the Public Safety office at “7911” with
the message, and they will take the necessary steps to deliver your
message.
Telephone calls for students working in campus offices will be forwarded
only if the caller knows the office or extension. Calls cannot be
forwarded by the switchboard operator to students living in on-campus
housing. PARKING
Parking is free in any of the designated areas on campus. Be sure to obey all
posted signs (Visitors Only, RSVP Parking, Police Parking, Disabled Parking,
Loading Zone, Fire Zone, One Way) including restricted parking areas. Parking
restrictions apply on campus 24 hours a day. College Public Safety officers
will issue parking citations for violations. When parking your vehicle, be
certain to store valuables out of sight and lock all doors.
The campus is open from 6:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m., seven days
a week. Gates to the campus will be locked at 11:00 p.m.,
and remained locked until
6:00
a.m. If you need additional information or special access, please contact
the Plant Services office at ext. 7250. PHOTOCOPYING
Photocopy machines for student use are located on both the second and third
floors of the library in Tioga Hall. Copies on both floors are paid for at
the counter – 5 cents for library materials and 10 cents for personal
materials. The copier on the second floor is also coin-operated.
PROFESSIONAL/TECHNICAL
Professional/Technical courses will vary but will have a departmental
prefix and a two-, three-, or four-digit number. Because course numbers
vary, students planning to transfer to four-year institutions should
follow the course selections shown under the Associate of Arts Oregon
Transfer (AAOT) requirements and consult with their faculty advisor.
