TRANSITIONAL EDUCATION (formerly ADULT LEARNING SKILLS PROGRAM)

The Adult Learning Skills Program provides classes and support to prepare participants
for success in the workforce and in academic programs. All programs under the
Adult Learning Skills umbrella have been integrated and are housed on campus
in the Newmark Center as an agency partner in the local Career and Opportunity
One-Stop. Adult Learning Skills Program classes are non-credit and most have
a $25 per term fee attached. There are both classes and service components
to the Adult Learning Skills Program.
Classes:
Adult Basic Skills Classes
- For adults returning to college after several years away from a school
environment.
- For adults needing to improve college placement scores.
- For adults whose education was interrupted prior to high school
graduation (GED).
- For adults needing basic skills improvement
for employment.
Pre-vocational Classes
- For college students planning programs in Early Childhood Education,
Office Occupations, and Computer Science who want to focus their
basic skills improvement in their major.
- For adults wanting to enhance academic skills to improve employability.
- For adults wanting to learn or improve basic computer skills.
- For personal development options.
English as a Second Language and Citizenship Classes
- For adults with limited English speaking skills.
- For developing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
- For survival, job performance and college entrance language skills.
- For citizenship information, written and oral interview skills.

ASSOCIATED STUDENT GOVERNMENT

When you enroll at Southwestern Oregon Community College you become a member
of the Associated Students. The governing body of this association is the Associated
Student Government (ASG). ASG operates under a constitution designed to promote
student activities that will stimulate the social, physical, moral and intellectual
well-being of Southwestern students. ASG belongs to state, regional and national
organizations such as Oregon Community College Student Association (OCCSA)
and the American Student Association of Community Colleges (ASACC). These organizations
provide services and information that assist ASG officers, representatives
and students in general.
Elections:
At the beginning of spring term, the Executive Cabinet members of ASG
are elected for the following year. Senior Senators are appointed by
the incoming Executive
Cabinet. An additional four Senators are elected at the onset of fall term.
Students running for office are required to have a 2.00 G.P.A. In addition,
the students taking offices of President and Vice-President must have completed
one term of full-time status and be registered as full-time students (12 hours
or more during each term) prior to election. Petitions for nomination may be
secured from the ASG offices during the time nominations are open. Deadlines
and further information are posted on campus and are printed in the student
newspaper during the course of the year.
Serve on Committees:
If you are interested in serving on a committee, please contact the
President of ASG. There are yearly openings on the following committees:
- Arts and Lectures
- Faculty Senate
- Financial Aid
- Publications
- Student Affairs
Meetings:
All meetings of the Associated Student Government are open to the
public. ASG meets on a weekly basis; contact a member of ASG for
the proper meeting
time.
Suggestion Box: Upset? Fed up!? Use the suggestion boxes located near the
entry on the first floor of Empire Hall, in the lobbies in Dellwood,
Fairview and
Lampa Halls or near the outside doors in Sitkum and Randolph.
Publications:
Sound off by writing a letter to the Editor in the campus newspaper,
the Southwester. Important information on activities and concerns
are publicized
through the
Southwester and posters.
Office of Student Activities:
We are here to serve you. Please feel free to stop by the Office
of Student Activities located in Empire Hall, Room 218.
