Southwestern Student Handbook

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
The Certificate of Completion is awarded for a specific curriculum of fewer than 90 credits and is approved by the State Board of Education. Programs that are at least 45 credits are considered one-year Certificates of Completion and are eligible for federal financial aid (15 of the last 30 credits must be completed at Southwestern). Programs that are fewer than 45 credits are considered less than one year Certificates of Completion. These programs are state approved but may not be eligible for federal financial aid (9 of the last 24 credits must be completed at Southwestern).

CHILD CARE

The Family Center offers the Educare preschool program with extended hours for child care for children of Southwestern students and employees, community members and One Stop clients. Educare serves as a model program and Teaching Lab for Southwestern’s Early Childhood Education program. The developmentally appropriate program has a strong emphasis on creative expression, social skills, and early literacy. It’s designed to help young children develop into happy, healthy children who are socially and intellectually competent and are eager to continue their learning. Short-term drop-in child care is also available. The Family Center’s programs are state-certified.

The Early Childhood Education and Family Studies Program is also located in the Family Center. This program provides students with the opportunity to obtain a one-year Certificate, an Associate in Applied Science, or an Associate in Science degree in the field of Early Childhood Education.

COMPUTER LABS

Computer lab hours vary and are posted each term. Southwestern has several instructional computer labs and one lab that is open for student use on a “drop in” basis. The open computer lab has IBM-compatible hardware and a variety of software. The Internet is accessible in the open lab and enforced access restrictions apply. Computer labs are also available in Gold Beach and Brookings Southwestern facilities.

CONSUMER INFORMATION
Several kinds of information about Southwestern Oregon Community College have been designated by government agencies as consumer information; this information is available to all currently enrolled and prospective students. This includes statistics about campus crime, graduation rates, attrition, and campus security policies. This information is available on the web site at www.socc.edu and in printed format from the Student 1st Stop Center.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION

In order to meet the education needs of all college district residents, off-campus classes are scheduled in Bandon, Coquille, Myrtle Point, Reedsport, Powers, Coos Bay, and North Bend. The offerings vary in each community from term to term. The courses offered are credit and non-credit. Check the current class schedule for more information.

Counseling services are designed to promote student growth by encouraging positive and realistic self-appraisal, intellectual and job skill development and appropriate personal and occupational choices. Counseling services include:

  • Career planning and exploration
  • Individual counseling
  • Educational advising
  • Transfer planning
  • Human development classes
  • New Student Orientation
  • Resumé and interview assistance
  • Assistance finding employment
