DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY
Possession by students of alcoholic beverages or controlled substances on the College campus or any other facility that is rented, leased, owned, or occupied by the College at any time shall be viewed as a violation of the Student Conduct Code.

Violation of the College’s Drug and Alcohol Policy carries with it penalties as described in the Student Conduct Code (Section II, VI C). Additionally, students may lose eligibility for federal financial aid or other institutional aid. Southwestern’s campus public safety officers are empowered to issue MIP (Minor in Possession) or PCS (Possession of a Controlled Substance) citations.

A Student Assistance Program as well as a variety of local services are available to students who seek help for a chemical dependency. Contact the Counseling Center for more information.

Student Support Services 888-7419
Student Support Services is one of the federally funded TRIO programs for education. Its goals are to help students graduate from Southwestern, to encourage students to transfer to a 4-year college or university, and to assist students with the transfer process. Services to eligible students include:

  • Personal, career, and academic advising and referrals
  • Skills assessment
  • Assistance in transferring to a four-year college or university
    Visits to Oregon’s four-year colleges and universities Workshops (such as Math Skill Building)
  • Tutoring in the SSS study hall
  • Cultural enrichment activities
  • PLATO: a computer-based individualized instructional system to improve skills in math, reading, writing, science, and social science

Disability Services for Students 888-7439

The Disability Services for Students Office provides services to students with documented disabilities (physical or learning) to help them be successful in college. Services:

  • Note takers/transcribers
  • Reader assistance
  • Assistance with registration
  • Interpreters for hearing impaired
  • Equipment aids
  • Additional accommodation as prescribed

The College recognizes the diversity of special needs that many students possess. The College uses the services of professionals and students to provide assistance to those who have learning difficulties or are physically challenged.

DISTANCE LEARNING

e-SOCC is Southwestern’ distance learning program which offers a variety of web-based and videoconferencing classes each term. Southwestern participates in a consortium with other Oregon Community College’s that is easily accessible through SOCC’s distance learning website http://www.socc.edu/dist_learn/. In addition, Southwestern offers courses from our own instructors as well. Many videoconferencing courses are delivered to our Brookings and Gold Beach Campuses. DRUG AND ALCOHOL-FREE CAMPUS

Southwestern is committed to maintaining an effective learning environment free from the negative influences of alcohol and drug abuse. The unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by students and employees on college property or as a part of any of its activities is strictly prohibited. Southwestern will impose disciplinary sanctions on students and employees consistent with local, state, and federal law and Board of Education policies. Information about applicable legal sanctions, description of health risks, and resources for treatment is made available for all employees through the college Human Resources Office.

ELEVATORS
Elevators are located in Tioga, Stensland, Prosper, Empire, and Newmark Center. Hours of operation during school terms are:

Mon.- Thurs. 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. Fri. 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Sun. 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. (to Library and computer lab only in Tioga)

The elevator in Prosper Hall is key-operated for handicapped access. For information, please contact the College switchboard at 888-2525.

EMERGENCIES
In the event of an emergency on campus, students or staff nearest the situation are requested to dial “7911’, or use one of the black emergency phones located in the buildings. STAY ON THE LINE UNTIL YOU ARE ASKED TO HANG UP! Make certain to give the dispatcher your name, phone extension, exact location of the emergency, the victim’s name, if applicable, and the victim’s condition. Campus Public Safety personnel will respond and/or contact necessary emergency services.

FACULTY OFFICE HOURS
All full-time faculty schedule five hours per week when they are available in their offices to meet with students. Instructors post their office hours on the doors of their offices; office hour information is also available from the telephone switchboard in Dellwood Hall and the Office of Instruction in Tioga Hall.

FAMILY CENTER

The Family Center strives to create a nurturing environment dedicated to the education and care of young children.

Preschool - The Southwestern Educare Preschool program is designed for children ages 2 1/2 to 5 years who enjoy daily activities focused on art, music and dance, drama, dramatic play, literacy, computer education, cooking, claywork, science, mathematics, social studies, and outdoor play/physical education. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Extended Care - Continuation of morning program for children 2 1/2 to 5 years. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Family Center operates as the lab school for the Southwestern Childhood Education and Family Studies Program.
