Requirements for Computers in Student Housing

If you plan to bring a computer with you to Southwestern Oregon Community College, and have Internet and email access from your personal computer, you must connect your computer to the campus network in order to receive your Internet service. The campus network cannot be bypassed by accessing local dialups (using phone modem, DSL, or cable modem) with an alternate Internet Service Provider. All local ISP access numbers are blocked in the campus phone switch. Television is by satellite, not cable. DSL is not available because all telephone lines pass through the College’s phone switch. Consequently, the only way to have Internet access and email on a personal computer is to connect to the campus network. To protect the campus network, your computer, and the quality of Internet access for all users, the College has implemented the following procedures and requirements before your personal computer can be connected to the campus network.

  1. All computers must have legal copy of Windows 2000, Windows XP (Professional or Home) or Mac 9.1 or better. Windows 95 & 98 do not work in our network environment and is not acceptable.
  2. All computers must have a Network Interface Card (NIC), properly installed driver and a network cable (the cord that connects the computer jack to the wall jack; this network cable has connectors that are wider than a standard telephone jack).
  3. The College will provide the College’s virus checking software.
  4. Any other virus checker on your computer will be removed.
  5. Any additional work will be charged per hour and will have to be scheduled to take place after all other computers that do not require additional work have been added to the domain. This cost cannot be charged to your student account at the College. Additional work might include:
    1. Upgrading Operating System
    2. Spyware removal
    3. Hardware conflicts fixed
    4. Install Network Interface Card (NIC) and driver
    5. Any other problems or installations requiring extra work
  6. You must deliver your computer to Randolph Hall room 1 on campus during scheduled hours where the work will be done during student housing move-in weekend.
  7. During the school year, any computer problems are your responsibility.
  8. While your computer is being configured to connect to the College network, you will have access to computers in the Willamette River computer lab in Student Housing (24/7) or on the fourth floor of Tioga Hall on campus (during regular working hours Monday-Friday).
