SWOCTET, an eight-person vocal ensemble from Southwestern Oregon Community College performed at the 3rd Annual A Cappella Festival in Bend, Oregon on February 10, 2018.

The Bend A Cappella Festival offers the opportunity for groups in junior high, high school, college, and beyond to connect with fellow a cappella singers and performers, gain more performance experience, learn and hone new skills, and hear from a cappella professionals. This year, the father of modern-day a cappella, Deke Sharon coached individual groups and was the MC for the opening concert featuring the House Jacks.

The Southwestern SWOCTET was extremely excited to be a part of this event as Deke Sharon was the arranger of two selections which the Vocal Jazz Ensemble sang last year at the The Apollo Theater in New York City. The group sang two jazz arrangements at the festival competition: "Here's That Rainy Day" arranged by Dave Barduhn, the founder of vocal jazz in Oregon through his work at Mt. Hood Community College; and, "En la Macarenita", arranged by Bob Chilcott.

The SWOCTET came away with renewed enthusiasm for music arranging and composing - along with beat-boxing. The headliner group, The House Jacks, led phenomenal workshops and kept the audience spellbound during the festival kick-off concert.
