SWOCC Student Housing Staff
We’re here to help! If you have housing questions, please email or call us at housing@socc.edu or 541-888-7635.
In housing, we are all about building community and providing the support you need to be successful. Our professional and student staff members are committed to learning about you and creating an environment you are excited to call home. We coordinate many activities throughout the year to connect you with campus, and help you meet people as you navigate living with different people and adjust to your new home in college. What you experience in housing here at Southwestern is on par with what you would experience at a four-year university—with some added perks! The apartment-style living arrangements right on the shore of Empire Lakes are designed for you to live with three to five other students. You can choose some or all of your apartment mates, or you can let us assign you to a room. Either way, we do our best to make your living situation a positive one.
Take A Tour
Drop-in tours are available from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Visit the Lighthouse Depot or call 541-888-7634.

Housing Leadership
Our job is to be here for you if and when issues arise—rest assured, we help with anything that comes up, big or small. Our student staff live in or near your buildings and housing staff is available 24-hours a day. With only about 400 other students living on campus, it’s very likely you’ll get to know most all of us here by name. We are walking around campus, eating at the cafeteria, and attending different events around campus right along with you. We look forward to getting to know you!

Joe Belter
Director of Residence Life
Joe has been at Southwestern since 2015 and as the lead on all things Laker housing since 2016. Prior to Southwestern, Joe gained plenty of university experience teaching classes at Clemson University, working in housing at New Mexico State University and serving as a graduate intern at Portland State University. When not at work, Joe enjoys spending time on the beautiful Oregon coast with his wife and three kids.

Michael Cole
Student Housing Services Representative
Mike moved to Coos Bay in 2005 to attend Southwestern, and has been a Laker ever since. After graduating, he held a wide variety of positions in our community and simultaneously received his Bachelor’s in History from Eastern Oregon University. Mike returned to work at Southwestern in 2010 holding many positions as a student support advocate, working in both the library and mail & print shop, and is now with us in student housing. Mike and his wife have six children together and love spending time outdoors with them.

Derek Ridgway
Resident Director
Derek is very familiar with the school and surroundings since he was a student at Southwestern, himself! At the time, he played on the Laker baseball team and then moved on to Pacific University where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Education and Learning. He returned to Southwestern in the Fall of 2019 to serve as the assistant baseball coach, and now we’re lucky to have him as a Resident Director at the college. Outside of work, Derek enjoys exploring the outdoors, traveling to play competitive softball and hitting up Prosper Hall for pick-up basketball games.
Resident Assistants
Resident Assistants (RAs) are second-year students who have lived on campus with us for at least a year. RAs build community within housing, plan fun and engaging events, and ensure residents are part of a positive living and learning environment. They are available after hours as well in case of emergency. We provide our RAs free housing and a meal plan.
