Welcome to the Student Recreation Center, located in the heart of the College’s Coos Campus! Often referred to as “The Rec,” we’re not your average gym; we’re all about blending fitness with fun and fostering a vibrant community.

Step into our 39,000 square foot facility, where students, staff, and community members come together to conquer their fitness goals. Whether getting reps in our well-equipped weight room, breaking a sweat on a variety of cardio machines, or reaching new heights on our 35 foot rock climbing wall, there’s a space to get your sweat on and build friendships.

What students are eligible to use the Rec Center?

Any Southwestern student, registered for a minimum of one paid credit per term will have access to the facility during open usage times.

How can community members use the facilities?

Any person not taking credit classes can register to use the Student Recreation Center by contacting the Student Recreation Center front desk at 541-888-7714.

Can kids use the Rec Center? How old do they have to be?

People who are 10-17 years old are permitted to use the facility with parent/guardian signature approval. For those 15 years and younger, an adult must be present with the youth. People 9 years of age or younger are not permitted to use the Student Recreation Center unless otherwise specified by an event, camp, or class.

Can I reserve a room within the Rec Center?

Rooms are open on an individual basis for use during times when not reserved for classes, community education, intercollegiate sports and intramurals. Schedules will be posted near the entrances to each room. People interested in securing a room for a specific group or event can submit a request by completing this form.

What equipment do you have available for check-out?

Recreational equipment may be checked out from the front desk with ID:

  • Basketballs, Footballs, Soccer balls
  • Bikes & Helmets with locks
  • Games (Groups can reserve a game space with Facilities; inquire at our Front Desk)
    • Corn hole
    • Spike ball
    • Kickball
    • Dodgeball
    • Indoor Pickleball
    • Table Tennis
    • Tug O’ War Ropes
  • Trout fishing poles and tackle* (Empire Lake is stocked by ODFW 4-5 times per year) *fishing license not provided

Can I bring any food/drinks into your facilities?

Clear drinks in plastic bottles are allowed in the weight room. Any other food and drink are only allowed in the lobby area.

Do you have locker rooms? What is your policy for using them?

Lockers are available on a first come, first served basis. All lockers are for day use only. All lockers must be emptied, cleaned out, and locks removed by the time you leave the building. Any remaining locks may be cut and items may be removed and disposed of.

What should I wear? Do you have a "dress code"?

General Dress Code for Exercise Rooms:

  • Acceptable Top: T-shirt, sweatshirt, full tank top (cover midriff).
  • Unacceptable Top: No shirt, bare midriff, sports bra, ripped tops.
  • Acceptable Bottom: Workout pants, sweatpants, shorts.
  • Unacceptable Bottom: Slacks, cut-offs, jeans, cargo pants, cargo shorts.
  • Acceptable Shoe: Athletic shoes. No open-toed shoes allowed.
  • Unacceptable Shoe: All other shoes (including dress shoes, sandals, and boots).

How do I use the Rock Climbing wall?

  • Climbers must be enrolled in an Indoor Rock Climbing class to use the climbing wall, only during approved times when a designated Rock Wall Supervisor is present.
  • Climbing shoes and socks must be worn while using the climbing wall. Shirts must be worn (no muscle shirts).

How do I use the Racquetball Court? Can I reserve a time?

  • The racquetball court is available in one-hour blocks, starting at the beginning of each hour. Please reserve your time at the Student Recreation Center front desk. Reservations can be made up to 48 hours in advance (limit one reservation at a time).
  • A reservation not claimed 15 minutes into the hour may be canceled.
  • Shoes that may scuff or otherwise damage the floor are not allowed.

What should I keep in mind when using the track/soccer field?

Track/Soccer Field Use:

  • Walking is to be done on the outer most lanes of the track.
  • No metal cleats are allowed anywhere on the soccer field or track.
  • No pets allowed.

Want to ride around campus? Shoot hoops? Cast a line at Empire Lake? The Rec Center has you covered. Check out bikes (with helmets and locks), sports balls (basketball, football, soccer, etc.), and even fishing poles with tackle—perfect for a break between classes.

Just bring your ID to the front desk, fill out a short release form, and head out on your next adventure.
