Get Started in the Trades!

Southwestern Oregon Community College’s FREE Construction and Heavy Equipment Operator Pre-Apprenticeship program, SWOCC Works, is a hands-on introduction to the construction trades and heavy equipment operation. The program builds foundational workplace safety knowledge and practical skills that prepare students for entry-level construction jobs and registered apprenticeship pathways.

Fall 2026 SWOCC Works classes will run October 5, 2026 – March 25, 2027. Students interested in participating during these dates are encouraged to follow instructions below about how to join.

This project is partially funded in partnership with Southwestern Oregon Workforce Investment Board (SOWIB) using Governor’s Statewide Activities grant funds from the U.S. Department of Labor in support of the Building Up Infrastructure, Labor, and Development (BUILD) Project across Coos, Curry, Douglas, Jackson, and Josephine counties.

SWOCC WORKS AT-A-GLANCE

Train. Certify. Get to work.

WHO?

Open to anyone 18 years and older. A strong fit for individuals interested in the trades, construction careers, or apprenticeship programs. No prior experience required!

WHAT?

The total program is 180 hours over 22 1/2 weeks. Complete a 120-hour, hands-on construction training program based on the nationally recognized MC3 curriculum, covering core construction fundamentals, workplace safety, and essential job-readiness skills. Hands-on projects introduce basic framing, electrical, plumbing, sheetrock installation, and exterior siding. Students will also complete an additional 60-hours of Heavy Equipment Operator simulation training and will receive a number of industry certifications.

WHEN?

The program runs approximately 22 1/2 weeks (two terms). Class days and times may vary each term, but are typically scheduled to support working adults.

WHY?

Because it’s FREE — and built to get you job-ready!

On-site advisors help students build connections and get ready for jobs or apprenticeships that match their goals.

Students who complete the program are eligible to receive 8 pre-apprenticeship application points to the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 701 and may qualify for direct entry.

What is the SWOCC Works Program?

This is an introductory, two‑term program (22 1/2 weeks, 180-hours) offering FREE training in construction trades and heavy equipment simulations. Who is eligible to apply?

This is open to anyone 18+ years old. No prior experience is needed.

Note: This program is NOT for experienced heavy equipment operators or construction workers.

Who teaches the program?

Experienced industry professionals guide both the simulated equipment sessions and classroom instruction — ensuring a real-world, hands-on learning environment.

How much does it cost? Is it really FREE?

There is no cost to participants. This program is fully-funded through a grant.

When and where is the program held?

The SWOCC Works program is currently offered at the Coos Campus (Coos Bay), located at 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.

Dates of the program vary, and will be updated on the top of this webpage as they become available. Generally, there is a daytime and evening option available.

SWOCC Works welcomes a new group of students each term (Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer). Carefully read and follow instructions below to join!

Get Your Student ID #

New to Southwestern? If you are new to Southwestern and/or have not completed any courses at Southwestern within the past year, complete the Community Education & Personal Enrichment application form. This will get you an active SWOCC Student ID number. You may skip this step if you have taken classes at Southwestern within the past year.

Already a student? If you’ve taken classes at Southwestern within the last year, SKIP AHEAD TO STEP #2. Just make sure you can log into myLakerLink using your Student ID # and password. Trouble logging in or resetting your password? Visit the Help Desk Portal for step-by-step instructions, or call Laker One Stop at 541-888-7352 for assistance.

IMPORTANT: Applications are processed as quickly as possible, but can take up to 2 business days to process, so plan accordingly!

Login to myLakerLink using your Student ID # and password.
Navigate to the SWOCC Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program page.
Complete and submit the program application form.

SWOCC Works Orientation

After submitting your application, expect an email to be sent to your socc.edu email account from a SWOCC Works representative

IMPORTANT: Be sure you setup, are able to access, and check your socc.edu email, as this is where your email will be sent!

The representative will outline the program expectations, time commitment and any next steps needed prior to starting the program.
They will also confirm availability and clarify your start date.
