BROOKINGS, Ore. – Southwestern Oregon Community College Curry Campus is pleased to invite the community to a presentation by Foncy Prescott, Vice President of the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society (KAS), titled “Backyard Birds – Protecting Birds at Home.” The event will take place on Thursday, September 10, 2026 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.
This is a free program sponsored by the Friends of Curry Campus and will be held in the Community Room on Southwestern’s Curry Campus, 96082 Lone Ranch Parkway (off Highway 101), Brookings.
Birds face many overlapping threats, including habitat loss, extreme and changing weather, window collisions, free-roaming cats, harmful outdoor lighting, pesticides, and infectious diseases.
Prescott will explain practical ways to reduce these dangers around our homes and yards, from preventing cat predation and window strikes to improving outdoor lighting and restoring habitat.
Prescott’s interest in birds began in childhood and grew through the Girl Scouts, where she learned to identify local species. During that era, the widespread use of DDT was contributing to severe declines in bird populations. Rachel Carson’s landmark book Silent Spring, published in 1962, raised public awareness of the damage caused by DDT and other pesticides. Prescott later addressed these concerns professionally. After moving to Curry County, she became involved with the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society.
Among her favorite summer visitors are Swainson’s Thrush, known for its hauntingly beautiful song, and the brilliantly colored Western Tanager.
Protecting birds does not require a large sanctuary. Clean water, native plants, bird-safe windows, fewer chemicals, responsible pet care, and thoughtful outdoor lighting can transform an ordinary yard into a valuable refuge. With a few simple changes, each of us can help local birdlife thrive.
