Coos Bay, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College is excited to announce its newest training initiative, the SWOCC Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program. Starting winter term, January 2024, this free state registered program is designed to provide comprehensive training in simulated heavy equipment operation, an introduction to the construction trades, career readiness, and OSHA safety.

The SWOCC Works program is tailored for individuals 16+ years old who are seeking the transferrable skills needed to enter apprenticeships, or to apply to jobs that may include operating equipment such as forklifts, loaders, bulldozers, graders, and cranes. In just two terms, participants will undergo 120 hours of FREE training under the guidance of industry-experienced instructors and earn a certificate of completion issued directly from the Bureau of Labor and Industry.

SWOCC Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program Highlights:

  • No experience required
  • High school juniors and seniors eligible
  • Classes available at SWOCC’s Coos and Curry campuses
  • Earn a BOLI-approved certificate
  • Gain entry-level construction skills
  • Obtain OSHA 10 certification

How-to Apply to the SWOCC Works Program: 

Please note there are separate instructions depending on if you are a currently enrolled high school student or a community member. Step one is different depending on your status. Please feel free to reach out via email (swoccworks@socc.edu) or call 541-888-1545 with questions that arise.

High School Learners:

A learner who is 16+ years old and currently enrolled in high school. Please follow these application instructions.

  1. Participants currently enrolled in a high school must first complete the College Now Application for Admission. *If you have a SWOCC ID, you do not need to complete this step. Your application will be processed and you will be issued a SWOCC ID number.
  2. Once you have a SWOCC ID, login to myLakerLink.
  3. Select the ‘Admissions’ tab.
  4. On the left side of the page, select ‘Program Applications’.
  5. Scroll down to the ‘Pre-Apprenticeship Application’ and complete the form.
  6. Once you have submitted your application, you will see a confirmation message. A staff member will contact you for an interview when your application is processed.

Community Members: 

A learner who is 16+ years old and NOT enrolled in high school. Please follow these application instructions.

  1. Participants NOT enrolled in high school must first complete the Community Education Application. *If you have a SWOCC ID, you do not need to complete this step. Your application will be processed and you will be issued a SWOCC ID number.
  2. Once you have a SWOCC ID, login to myLakerLink.
  3. Select the ‘Admissions’ tab.
  4. On the left side of the page, select ‘Program Applications’.
  5. Scroll down to the ‘Pre-Apprenticeship Application’ and complete the form.
  6. Once you have submitted your application, you will see a confirmation message. A staff member will contact you for an interview when your application is processed.
