Southwestern Offers Free GED Classes Fall Term 2022

Coos Bay, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College is offering free GED® and Adult Basic Education classes fall term 2022. These classes prepare individuals to take the GED® exam and update skills to enroll in college or career training programs. Students enrolled in these classes can build a pipeline to enter college, training programs, and jobs in high-demand career areas.

We will have three options for GED® and Adult Basic Education classes next term:

1. Morning GED® Class – Monday through Thursday from 9am-11am

2. Afternoon GED® Class – Monday through Thursday from 12pm-2pm

3. Evening GED® Class – Tuesday through Thursday from 5pm – 8pm

All classes will be live and in person on the Coos Campus. The afternoon class will also be live and in person on the Curry Campus.

For students who cannot make it to either campus, classes are offered via Zoom during all three sessions. Fall Term starts September 12th and ends November 23rd.

Southwestern hosts community forum for Curry County residents

Brookings, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College invites Curry County residents to a community forum to help shape the future of education and job training in the region.

The event will be held from 2-4 pm, Monday, July 25, 2022 at the Curry Campus, 96082 Lone Ranch Parkway, north of Brookings. College staff wants to hear from people of all ages to gather ideas that will help determine the vision for the campus and college programs and services in Curry County.

College president Dr. Patty Scott and Vice President of Instruction Dr. Ali Mageehon will highlight recent Curry Campus initiatives. Southwestern also has an opportunity to expand its footprint at the campus and continue to develop educational programs that respond to needs today, and as communities evolve in the future.

“We want to hear from the community how the college can best support Curry County residents and local businesses through education and training,” President Scott said. “How are industries changing? What new jobs might be coming? Also, how can we make college more accessible to students and meet their needs?”

The Curry Campus was built in 2012 and is located just off U.S. Highway 101 at 96082 Lone Ranch Parkway in Brookings. The campus currently offers GED classes, short-term training, university transfer degrees and community education classes.

Coos Bay, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College announces the names of students who excelled spring term for the 2021-2022 academic school year. These students are being recognized with placement on the college’s Dean’s List (DL), Honor Roll (HR) and Academic Excellence (AE) list.

• Academic Excellence – students must receive a GPA of 4.0 in at least 12 credits

• Honor Roll – students must receive a GPA between 3.5 and 3.99 in at least 12 credits

• Dean’s List – students must receive a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49 in at least 12 credits

Southwestern Athletics Awarded NJCAA Sport Opportunity Grant From NJCAA Foundation

Coos Bay, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College’s Athletic Department was awarded a $1,000 grant from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Foundation to assist in sustaining swimming and women’s wrestling at Southwestern. The NJCAA Sport Opportunity Grant was created to support the addition and growth of two-year collegiate sports. “The NJCAA Foundation is excited to further support the growth of NJCAA member colleges and the sport programs they offer through the newly created NJCAA Sport Opportunity Grant,” said Brian Luckett, NJCAA Foundation Executive Director. “The ability to provide this funding for the first time ever is a testament to the importance and growth of two-year collegiate athletics. The NJCAA Foundation looks forward to this initiative’s impact as NJCAA member colleges continue to create opportunities for student-athletes across the country.”

The women’s wrestling program, which started at Southwestern in 2010, has grown over the years and officially became a part of the NJCAA during the 2021-22 school year. The men’s and women’s swim teams started in the fall of 2014 and recently finished as national runners-up at the 2022 NJCAA Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving National Championship. Both programs continue to work to grow their sport by adding equipment needs and recruiting student-athletes from all over the world. “We are honored to be chosen for this grant from the NJCAA and are extremely excited about using these funds towards supporting our student-athletes,” said Mike Herbert, Director of Athletics at Southwestern. “The funding we received will go towards purchasing much needed equipment to help our student-athletes train so they can compete at a high-level year after year.” About the NJCAA Foundation: The mission of the NJCAA Foundation is to enhance the NJCAA national organization, student-athletes, member colleges, and local communities through financial support, scholarships, program initiatives, and community service. STEM Student Art Exhibit – Strategic Initiatives: Groundbreaking Innovation Evolved from Initial Military Purposes

Coos Bay, OR – Southwestern Oregon Community College is proud to host our STEM Student Art Exhibit Strategic Initiatives: Groundbreaking Innovation Evolved from Initial Military Purposes beginning Tuesday, June 14, 2022 until mid-October in the new Umpqua Hall Health and Science Building on the Coos campus (1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay).In celebration of the exhibit please join us Tuesday, June 14^th at 7:00 pm for our exhibit opening. Our exhibit opening is timed with Flag Day and the US Army’s birthday to celebrate the contributions that Veterans across the nation made to the scientific world we experience today. We appreciate the continued community support of our STEM programs and events and are excited to showcase our students’ work.

The exhibit features projects and research posters from students in physics, astronomy, and biology courses addressing scientific advancements spurred by military involvement. Exhibit curator Krystal Hopper and Southwestern Associate Professor of Physics, Dr. Aaron Coyner worked with students from March to September of 2021 on the showcased projects addressing questions inspired by Neil DeGrasse Tyson and Avis Lang’s book Accessory to War: The Unspoken Alliance Between Astrophysics and the Military. Their work explores how tools and methods developed for astronomy and astrophysics were applied to military endeavors and vice versa. Student projects include medical advancements in prosthetics, satellite communication,the return to the Moon, and the development of the United States Space Force, among others.
